Linux Administration I System and Users

This manual is an introduction to Linux system administration. Starting from basic knowledge about using Linux, it conveys the most important theoretical underpinnings and practical skills required to configure and operate a stand-alone Linux-based computer.

This manual is meant for users who have knowledge and experience of using Linux or Unix systems at a level equivalent to the Linup Front manual, Introduction to Linux and are looking for a concise but exhaustive introduction to Linux system administration. Prerequisites include confidence using the shell and a text editor as well as experience with the common command line tools on a Linux system.

The manual covers, after an introduction to the significance and basic problems of system administration, the basics of process, user account, and access control management, the management of disk partitions, file systems, and quotas, common boot loaders, the system startup and shutdown process, PC hardware, and library and distribution package management.

The knowledge and skills acquired from this manual are required for further Linup Front manuals or to obtain LPI certification.
